Curriculum Areas from Carol Hurst's Children's Literature Site - Links to integrate language arts with subject areas like U.S. history, listing topics to link to such as flight and planes, World War II, and quilts. Some lesson plans included.

The English Room - Under development by Marsha Brown, an English teacher, includes poetry lessons, grading rubrics, and Internet treasure hunts for students.

Clearinghouse on Reading, English and Communication - Literacy education and literature resources including lesson plans for early childhood to adolescence.

SCORE CyberGuides - From the Schools of California Online Resources for Education. "Supplementary, standards-based, web-delivered units of instruction centered on core works of literature."

Six-trait Assessment for Beginning Writers - Rubrics for assessment of the writing of young children.

Organizations

International Reading Association (IRA) - Includes news, meetings and events, selections from print journals such as The Reading Teacher, Reading Online, an electronic journal of research and practice for K-12 teachers, and Children's, Teachers' and Young Adults' Choices.

National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) - Spotlight on related news, conventions, position statements, resources for new teachers, listservs, and teaching ideas can be found at this site. Journals show table of contents for current issue and selections from previous issues.

Content Sites

Writing with Writers: Poetry - Workshops with writers Jack Prelutsky (for grades 1-4), Karla Kuskin (for grades 4-8) and Jean Marzollo (for grades 2-5) offer tips and techniques to help students write their own poetry.

Poets.org - From the Academy of American Poets, this site features biographies, clips of poets reading their poems, information about National Poetry Month (April), a poetry map listing poets, organizations, bookstores and events by state, and lesson plan ideas for teachers. Grades 8-12.

Shakespeare for Kids - From the Folger Shakespeare Library, this site provides word games, facts, coloring pages, and more to engage students Grades 5 and up.

Absolute Shakespeare - Contains full text of plays, sonnets, and poems as well as study guides, biographical information, trivia, history of the Globe Theater, timeline, and debate about Shakespeare's authorship. Gr. 8 and up.

Shakespeare for Students - Contains six open-ended activities to be completed using the Encyclopedia Brittanica online; each activity includes a teacher guide with teaching ideas and additional resources. Gr. 8 and up.

Creative Writing Process - Created by a teacher in Canada, this site covers all of the steps of writing for students including brainstorming, mapping, editing, and references. Teachers can also write for a book of lessons ans worksheets.

Giggle Poetry - Poems, activities, and contests available for elementary students plus some tips for teachers at this site.

RPO: Representative Poetry Online - Poets and poetry searchable by name, first line, and a keyword. Grades 9-12.

Mr. William Shakespeare and the Internet - An annotated guide to scholarly resources. Includes a Shakespeare timeline, genealogical chart, timeline summary chart, and bibliograpy.

Reference Sources

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations - Searchable by keyword and indexes.

Dictionaries - A variety of dictionaries available including languages, vocabulary, and slang.

Webster Dictionary & Thesaurus - In addition to the dictionary and thesaurus, vocabulary games and crosswords.

Television
  Between the Lions - Produced by WGBH and Sirius Thinking, related to program on PBS, but not necessary to see the episodes to use materials at this site. Included are stories, games, literacy tips, and bibliographies.
