Calligraphy classes are offered every semester in general classrooms equipped with audio-visual equipment. Courses are led by Cheryl Jacobsen. Check listings at ISIS for course availabilities and offerings; enter 108 in the "Department" field then click on "Search."
Courses:
History of Western Letterforms
History of Western letterforms, with focus on tools, materials, techniques; the major hands, their place in history, their influence on modern times; creation of letterforms using appropriate tools; hands-on approach with emphasis on understanding rather than mastery.
Calligraphy: Foundational Hands
Fundamental calligraphic skills using Roman majuscule, Humanistic minuscule, Italic; basic layout and color theory incorporated into letter practice.
Calligraphy: Blackletter Hands
Covers the hands known as Blackletter while refining calligraphic skills, developing creative projects and talking about the historical and social connections these hands make.
Calligraphy: Italic and Script Hands
Hands-on instruction in italic and pressure pen scripts; historical relationships, effects on modern letterforms.
Studies in Letter Arts
Special topics and advanced projects in calligraphy and letter arts. Prerequisite " "History of Western Letterforms," "Calligraphy: Foundational Hands," "Calligraphy: Blackletter Hands," or consent of instructor.
