Casebook: Carter, Franklin and Wright, The First Amendment and the Fifth Estate (6th ed. 2003). (When picking up a casebook, be aware that (a) our authors have another casebook, called The First Amendment and the Fourth Estate, (b) there may be used copies of the 5th edition of our casebook, and that (c) neither will work.)
Syllabus and Reading Assignments: Your source for anything you'd ever want to know about this class can be found through the class Web site: http://www.uiowa.edu/~cyberlaw/lem06. The syllabus that is linked from there includes, among many other things, early reading and writing assignments. If you do not have Web access, the documents can be made available to you in hard copy from my assistant, Lisa Schomberg, Room 405.
Exciting Development: It turns out that 2005 was the year all Iowa TV station licenses expired. A local group ("IBLTV," Iowans for Better Local Television) protested the FCC's renewal of an Eastern Iowa TV station's license (a "Petition to Deny" for station KGAN-TV2, owned by Sinclair and affiliated with CBS). FCC deadlines were met: the renewal was filed by October 1, the protest before the end of December. As of the date of this notice, seven months later, the FCC has not yet responded to IBLTV's Petition -- a longer delay than normal. We'll be keeping an eye on this case.
Contacts: Feel free to stop by my office (BLB 445) any time the door is open. Or, if you prefer (it's not necessary so far as I'm concerned), you may make an appointment. The best means of communication is email; the best phone number for messages is 337-5555. My e-mail address is available (along with other "coordinates") at http://www.nicholasjohnson.org/mainpage.html#Contacts%20Nicholas, my general Web site is http://www.nicholasjohnson.org, and my Blog is FromDC2Iowa.blogspot.com. Ms. Schomberg's office phone number is 335-9091.
