Herky The Hawk
So now you're asking "What does Herky have to do with Delta Tau Delta?" It's very simple, Herky has been a member of Delta Tau Delta since 1962. That's right for the last 32 years everytime Herky takes the field or visits a sick child at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, it is a Delt behind the mask. The University of Iowa had not had an animated mascot since 1959. In 1962 Delt pledge Larry Herb convinced the Athletic Department that he could personally represent The University as Herky. With the help of the Art Department, who created the 25 pound fiberglass head, and the Home Economics Department, who sewed the uniform, Herky was reborn. Herb continued as the anonymous mascot until 1965. Upon his graduation he asked his Delt brother, Dean Sieperda to take over the mascot duties. Thus starting the tradition of Delt Herkys. Herky has come a long way since those early days. The new Kevlar heads weigh only between 2.5 and 7 pounds. This year Nathan Jackman and Matt Hannell lead a squad of 4 lead Herkys that perform at sporting events, while any Delt who aspires to make the Herky Squad can work his way up by performing at any of the 400+ Community Service events per year. We are all very proud of the accomplishments of Herky over the years and look forward to many more glorious years.
