
The Certificate in Performing Arts Entrepreneurship requires a minimum of 20 semester hours in arts entrepreneurship coursework and 9 s.h. in 100-level or above courses in an arts-based major. Students should be aware that some of these courses may have prerequisites and should talk to an advisor to discuss a sequence of dance, music, or theater courses for the certificate. Students may apply up to 9 s.h. of transfer credit towards the certificate, with approval of the performing arts entrepreneurship advisor.
Students must complete 9 s.h. of 100-level or above courses in one of the following departments: Dance, Music, or Theatre. Students should be aware that some of these courses may have prerequisites and should consult an advisor about course sequence. Students may not "double count," that is, use specific courses required for the certificate which are cross-listed in Dance, Music, or Theatre to fulfill this requirement. Certificate students are strongly encouraged, but not required, to pursue full majors in one of the art disciplines.
An introduction to understanding financial statements including the basics of balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Students will also learn about preparing pro forma financial statements for new ventures.
An introduction to basic marketing concepts for non-business majors; review of traditional and guerrilla marketing strategies; focus on marketing information required in a business plan.
An analysis of arts administration principles and trends as applied to the creation of an arts-related enterprise. Students will examine case studies and create a business plan for a new arts organization or project.
Understanding the process of either capital acquisition for commercial ventures or grant writing for non-profit ventures; identifying sources and strategies for raising capital and managing cash flow.
Gain practical understanding of marketing concepts for application in new business settings. Students develop a marketing plan, identify markets, create products, design promotions and sales programs, and assess ongoing customer service needs.
This course will examine how technology and the internet can be used in support of company objectives. Students will analyze how organizations use web sites to communicate with their customers and employees. Students will analyze E-Commerce methodologies that are currently in use with real companies and student teams will develop an E-Commerce strategy for a start-up enterprise.
A study of nonprofit arts management and administrative principles, practical applications, and trends. This course focuses on existing arts organizations and the functions and responsibilities of key administrative positions.
