The 2nd Annual Disability Summit was held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.
During the full-group discussion, many attendees publicly expressed personal commitments to build disability confidence on the UI campus. Following is a list of the commitments made at that time:
Commitment to action:
- Mark Harris – go on more recruitment trips to actively recruit students with disabilities
- Marcella David – find out what the College of Law Admissions Committee says about students with disabilities and be proactive
- Sue Buckley – make sure the development of year-long on-boarding for employees has disability component
- Tiffini Stevenson Earl – get the Disability Summit listed as a professional development activity and send letters to all of attendee supervisors saying they participated in this important event/discussion
- Mark Hale –along with the Senior Web Masters commit to universal design as an important theme this year
- Carol Wozniak-Rebhuhn – relooking at Organizational Effectiveness website & make sure links are highlighting disability services & that the site is accessible/usable
- David Fitzgerald – work with CDE or DPAC to create an on-line discussion social networking (blog) site
- Sue Buckley – commit everyone in this room, when candidates show up on campus to interview for the Chief Diversity Officer position, ask questions or make statements that strongly indicate the importance of disability awareness for the position/candidate
- David Fitzgerald – commit central administration to send out a centralized from the top message that this is important
- Dennis Maki – to assist university programs, faculty, staff to adopt universal design to make curriculum accessible to all
- Val Garr – excited about working with the new student organization on disabilities
- Carly Armour – commit to working with students and to bringing together panelist to share experiences
- John Mikelson- Mutual collaboration with the UI Veterans Association and the newly formed Student for Disability Awareness, mentoring through the Office of Student Life
- Jennifer Modestou – commit EOD to learn more about community organizations and have them on their website as available resources and ensure information/documents are accessible & communicating importance of accommodating persons with disabilities
- Jan Gorman – to working with the Brown Bags - Steve Kuusisto has film to show during brown bag
- David Fitzgerald – committed to stay for writing contest
- Marcella david –commit a little money to help support brown bags with beverages/cookies to draw audience in
- Andrew Imparato – commit to tell Senator Harkin about the UI Disability Summit and others that would be interested in our efforts
