Key Interview Questions

Employers and job-seekers alike have identified the following questions as key interview questions new teachers will encounter in most interviews:
  1. Why did you choose teaching as a career?
  2. What is your teaching philosophy?
  3. Describe yourself using 5 adjectives.
  4. What worked best for you in classroom control?
  5. What if...?
  6. How did you provide for individual differences within your classroom?
  7. What were your most effective ways to motivate students?
  8. How did you get students excited about your subject area?
  9. What strategies do you use to evaluate student performance?
  10. What technology did you use in teaching your subject?
  11. Describe in detail a lesson that you taught.
  12. Tell me about the type of relationship you established with your students during student teaching.
  13. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?
  14. Give examples describing your communication with parents.
  15. As you look back on your student teaching experience, what was most effective about you? About your style? What was least effective about your teaching style?

Be Ready To Ask Questions, too

Many recruiters will save time at the end of the interview for questions that you would like to ask. Some topics that you may want to inquire about include:

  1. Parent involvement
  2. Support systems for staff and for students
  3. Evaluation and assessment methods for students and staff
  4. Established policies for student behavior
  5. Specific teaching materials in your specialty
  6. Participation in professional development and in-service training
