Carolyn Colvin

Carolyn Colvin teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the elementary and secondary teacher education program. In addition, she is the coordinator of the newly created Ph.D. program in Language, Literacy, and Culture, designed to provide coursework focusing on literate practices and the influences of home and community cultures. As a researcher, Carolyn has explored the reading-writing relationship for adolescents as they are influenced by self-perceptions of their own literacy performance. For the past seven years, she has directed a site-based rural community research project studying adult/family literacy behaviors for Mexican-origin families supported by grants from the FINE Foundation. Carolyn has published in The Reading Teacher, Journal of Reading, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and Journal of Educational Psychology, among others. She received a Collegiate Teaching Award in 1994 and chairs the College of Education Diversity Committee and is a member of the President's Committee on Diversity. Carolyn has taught junior and senior high students and adults, and continues to be involved in teaching adult students who are learning English as their second language.
