English Education Teaching Minor

The undergraduate minor is for students who have already been admitted to another program in teacher education but who want to add a secondary endorsement in English. Students may complete the minor and receive the endorsement in English only if they have already been admitted to another program. While this program meets minimum requirements for licensure, the department recommends that students who want to teach English have considerable more training in the field.

The Program

Students must take a minimum of 24 semester hours in English, to include the following courses:

  • One course on British literature
  • One course on American literature
  • One course on Creative or Expository Writing
  • One additional course in English
  • 07S:182/008P:182 Language and Learning
  • 07S:193/08P:198 Reading and Teaching Adolescent Literature
  • 07S:155/08N:141 Approaches to Teaching Writing
  • 07S:194 Methods High School Reading
  • 07S:115 Methods English

Student Teaching

Generally, students seeking an endorsement to teach English through the undergraduate minor will student teach half-time in English and half-time in their other area.
