Calling all enthusiasts of Queen Victoria, British parlors, and poetry in performance! On Saturday, April 4th, 2009, at 7 p.m., the University of Iowa’s Department of English, the Department of Theatre Arts, the School of Music, and Prairie Lights Bookstore will join forces to present “Celebrating Victorian Women’s Lives: An Evening of Recitations and Music.” Inspired by parlor recitations and home theatricals of the nineteenth century, the event will highlight poetry and music written by Victorian women writers and composers and will be performed by a collection of faculty, graduate student, and undergraduate actors from the university and the Iowa City area. Professor Judith Pascoe from the Department of English will introduce the performance. The event will be held at the Senate Chamber of the University of Iowa’s historic Old Capitol building and is free and open to the public.
