As a Kansas native, I have always been interested in the literature and culture of the American West and the Midwest. After receiving a BA in English at the University of Chicago, I began my graduate studies at the University of Iowa.

Since beginning the English Ph.D. program, I have developed my interests in new directions, including 19th century periodical literature, Native American literature, and familial metaphors in American literature. I recently presented a paper on the Cherokee Phoenix, a 19th century Native American periodical, which I am revising into an article for publication and as a chapter of my dissertation.

This spring, I am presenting a paper on the Native American poet Luci Tapahonso and depictions of food and family life in her work. I am also attending a seminar on Native American literature at the Newberry Library in Chicago. My research and teaching interests coincide as I am currently teaching the Literature of Native American Peoples. I have also taught Rhetoric, Interpretation of Literature, and American Lives at the University of Iowa. In addition, I am a Program Associate for the General Education Literature Department and I tutor in the Rhetoric Department's Writing Center.
