Albert J. Harris Award (1981): Given by the International Reading Association for the year's outstanding published contribution to the remediation of reading disabilities (co-recipient).

Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award (1986): College of Education, University of Illinois at Chicago.

Sidney Suslow Award (1987): Given by the Association For Institutional Research for significant, original contributions to research and scholarship in institutional research and administrative decision making (co-recipient).

Outstanding Contributions to Research Award (1988): Given by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators for significant research contributions to student affairs and higher education.

Distinguished Research Award (1989): Given by the American Educational Research Association - Division J for outstanding research or scholarship that has significantly advanced the study of postsecondary education.

Forum Best Paper Award (1991): Given by the Association for Institutional Research for the best paper presented at the 1990 annual meeting (co-recipient).

James F. Towey University Scholar (1991-92): Award made by the University of Illinois Foundation and includes a three-year, $36,000 discretionary grant. "University Scholar" status is the highest award that can be given by the University of Illinois to a faculty member.

Research Achievement Award (1991): Given by the Association for the Study of Higher Education for significant contributions to the study of higher education (co-recipient). The award was made for the book: How College Affects Students: Findings and Insights from Twenty Years of Research.

Contribution to Knowledge Award (1992): Given by the American College Personnel Association for outstanding and meritorious contributions to the body of knowledge of the profession.

American College Personnel Association Senior Scholar (1992).

Forum Best Paper Award (1996): Given by the Association for Institutional Research for the best paper presented at the 1995 annual meeting (co-recipient).

American College Personnel Association Commission IX Research Award (1997). The award was made for the paper : "What have we learned from the first year of the National Study of Student Learning." Journal of College Student Development, 1996, (37), 182-192.
