School of Music to host pair of free performances
Kantorei, the University of Iowa School of Music’s premiere choral ensemble, and the Composers Workshop, a collaborative project between the school’s composers and performers, will offer free concerts in Iowa City this weekend.
Kantorei will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 30 North Clinton Street in downtown Iowa City. The ensemble, directed by Timothy Stalter, is comprised of 28 singers, most of whom are graduate students, and performs on campus four or five times a year.
The Composers Workshop will present new compositions by music students at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall, located on the first floor of the Old Capitol Town Center in downtown Iowa City. The workshop, which presents a series of free concerts each semester, is directed by David Gompper, professor of music and director of the UI Center for New Music.
The concert will feature Aaron Perrine's "Flow" for alto saxophone and piano, Daniel Roeder's "Entities" for a sextet of wind and string instruments, Zachariah Zubow's "Disorient" for saxophone quartet, Matthew Dotson's Study for Violin, and Daniel Houglum's "Intercessions II" for soprano saxophone and fixed electronic media.
The School of Music is part of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
