The University of Iowa Band Extravaganza, presented by the UI School of Music, will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

This year's performers will be three bands at the University: the Symphony Band, under the direction of Richard Mark Heidel; the Johnson County Landmark (JCL) jazz big band, under John Rapson, UI director of jazz studies; and the Hawkeye Marching Band, under Kevin Kastens.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 the night of the show, and are available through the Hancher Auditorium box office.

The top concert ensemble in the UI Department of Bands, the Symphony Band performs many of its own full-length concerts during the year, both on and off campus. The band will perform "The Star Spangled Banner," arranged by John Philip Souza; "Early Light" (based on "The Star Spangled Banner") by Carolyn Bremer; "National Emblem" by Edwin Eugene Bagley; and "America the Beautiful" Samuel Augustus Ward, arranged by Carmen Dragon.

JCL is the University's ensemble devoted to the performance of original works by the great composers of the big-band jazz repertory. The band will perform "Pythodd Fellows" by John La Barbera, Gerald Wilson's "Blues for Yna Yna," and "Friday Night at the Cadillac Club" by Bob Berg.

Because the Hawkeye Marching Band is a big draw for ardent Hawkeye fans, Band Extravaganza performances always feature a sea of black-and-old-gold in the audience. This year the band will recap music from the 2009 marching season.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
