Bijou Back in Business with Screenings in Van Allen Hall—The Bijou Theater, the independent film house operated by University of Iowa students, has resumed screenings in a temporary location—lecture hall 2 of Van Allen Hall—and will offer nightly showings of the acclaimed breakdancing documentary Planet B-Boy at 7 and 9 p.m. through Thursday, July 24. Public Readings, Discussions to Be Held During Summer Writing Festival—Elevenses, a series of readings and discussions of literary topics that is a traditional feature of the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, will be offered at 11 a.m., Monday–Friday, July 21–25. (more)
Johnson County Fair to Feature Various Fun Activities—Nothing quite illustrates rural Iowa living like a county fair—and Johnson County’s fair is no exception. The Johnson County Fair, which kicks off this week, features livestock judging, bingo, a truck/tractor pull, carnival rides, samurai arts performances, a pork grilling contest, a talent show, and more. There also will be dozens of exhibitors on hand. (more)
Fuddy Meers to Conclude Unforgettable Summer Rep 2008—David Lindsay-Abaire's dark comedy Fuddy Meers will complete the flood-displaced run of Iowa Summer Rep 2008, at 8 p.m., Wednesday–Saturday, July 23–26, in the auditorium of Iowa City West High School. (more)
Johnston, Horan to Close Out Prairie Lights' Summer Readings—Fiction writer Bret Anthony Johnston, a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop and a faculty member in the 2008 Iowa Summer Writing Festival, and novelist Nancy Horan will hold free readings in Prairie Lights Books this week. Rod Pierson Big Band featuring Craig Boche to Perform at Friday Night Concert Series—The annual Friday Night Concert Series will continue this week with a performance by Rod Pierson Big Band featuring Craig Boche from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Friday, July 25, north of the Sheraton City Plaza Hotel in downtown Iowa City. Pentacrest Free Movie Series to Show Ghostbusters—The Saturday Night Free Movie Series will continue its 2008 season with live entertainment and a free screening of Ghostbusters on the lawn of the Pentacrest at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 26. (more)
Hawkeye Fans, Show Your Artistic Side—Fans of the University of Iowa football program are invited to submit a design for the official t-shirt created to celebrate this year's "Be Bold, Wear Gold" game, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, in Kinnick Stadium against the University of Wisconsin. Old Capitol Exhibit Showcases History of Creative Writing at University—Beginning with the first verse-making class in the late 1800s through recent Pulitzer Prize awardees, an exhibition at Old Capitol Museum shows how diverse personalities and historical circumstances combined to make The University of Iowa "The Writing University."
