Who needs to take the ALEKS Mathematics Placement Exam?

First-Year Students

All incoming first-year students are required to take ALEKS. This includes students with AP, CLEP, or dual enrollment math credits.

Continuing Students

Continuing students interested in enrolling in a UI math course must have the appropriate ALEKS score or, have earned a grade of C- or better in a prerequisite course.

New Transfer Students

Transfer students in the majors listed below and transfer students who intend to take a math course at UI and have not yet completed calculus must take ALEKS. If you do not know whether you should take ALEKS, contact the Academic Advising Center at, advising-center@uiowa.edu.

Actuarial Science Engineering Pharmacy (Preparatory Course Work)
Applied Physics Environmental Sciences Physical Therapy (Preparatory Course Work)
Astronomy Geoscience Physician Assistant (Preparatory Course Work)
Athletic Training Health and Human Physiology Physics
Biochemistry Human Physiology Podiatry (Preparatory Course Work)
Biology Informatics Sociology
Business Mathematics Speech and Hearing Science
Chemistry Medicine (Preparatory Course Work) Statistics
Chiropractic Medicine (Preparatory Course Work) Microbiology Veterinary Medicine (Preparatory Course Work)
Computer Science Nursing Interest  
Dentistry (Preparatory Course Work) Optometry (Preparatory Course Work)  

Upper Level Calculus Courses

If your ALEKS score is 80% or above and you are interested in taking a course beyond Calculus I, you will need to take the UI Math Placement Test Level 3 (MPT3).

NOTE:  Students admitted to the College of Engineering with ALEKs scores at or above 80% are required to take the MPT3.
