Proposal
That the University of Iowa sponsor a competition for the creation of an
official flag for the University that could be flown on all appropriate
University occasions and on the dome of the Old Capitol (once rebuilt) along
side the US and Iowa Flag which flag could be flown at half-staff upon the death
of a member of the University community.
Rationale
- The
University of Iowa has had a tradition of flying the US Flag at half-staff
on the death of a member of the University community and at the direction of
the UI President.
- Typically,
(but not always) the US Flag is flown at half-staff at the death of a
national or state leader as a sign of respect.
- Having
a UI Flag which could be flown at half-staff would seem to be a more
appropriate sign of respect for a member of the University community as it
more appropriately signals the deceased person’s connection to the
University.
- Commissioning
a UI Flag would also provide an occasion for an artistic competition and a
campus celebration which hopefully could coincide with the dedication (I
assume there will be one) of the rebuilt dome.
