COMMITTEE ON THE SELECTION OF CENTRAL ACADEMIC OFFICIALS

2002-2003 Annual Report

CHARGE

University of Iowa Faculty Senate Bylaws, Article III, Section 2:

The Committee on the Selection of Central Academic Officials: (1) consults with and advises the Board of Regents regarding the selection of the president of the University and with the president regarding the selection of other central academic officials; (2) consults with and advises the president of the University, on invitation, regarding appropriate processes for conducting searches for central academic officials; and (3) participates in the review of all central academic offices and officers. These include the president, the several vice-presidents, and University-wide administrative deanships.

Fewer than all members of the Committee may be appointed to consult regarding the selection of the president or the selection of other central academic officials. Two members of the Committee will be appointed by the Faculty Senate president in consultation with the chairperson of the Committee to participate in the academic review of central academic offices and officers.

The Committee shall consist of members from at least three different Colleges and its membership shall appropriately reflect the expertise and diversity of the entire faculty. The Faculty Senate president is ex officio a member of this Committee when it is consulting on the selection of a president of the University.

Activities:

 

1.       Review of the Office of the Provost was completed in the summer of 2002. Matt Rizzo participated from the Committee.

 

2.       Selection of the University of Iowa President was conducted from August through December, 2002. In August the search for a new University of Iowa President was begun with Jonathan Carlson as Chair. James Torner participated from the Committee on the Selection Committee. The Presidential Search Committee held meetings weekly. Selection criteria were established in August. Solicitation of candidates occurred in September and October. Screening of credentials and off-campus interviews were done during November. On campus interviews were conducted in December of 2002. Members of the Committee on the Selection of Central Academic Officials participated in the faculty interview session and in the open forum. Comments were sent to the Search Committee. The Board of Regents selected President Skorton in January 2003. 

3.       Review of the Office of the President is underway. Lynn Richman is participating on the Committee. The Presidential Review Committee has met with Dr. Skorton twice. The PRC have independently interviewed each member of the President's Office staff and has surveyed the faculty and staff with an e-mail questionnaire. They are currently reviewing the responses to the questionnaire which were extensive. The PRC will then meet with Dr. Skorton to apprise him of our findings and recommendations. 

4.       Selection of the Search Committee for Provost of the University of Iowa. The Chair in accordance with the Operations Manual Section 2.8(1)(e) has met with President Skorton, Faculty Senate President Cox and Chairperson of the Committee on Committees Raymond in selecting a search committee. The Provost Search Committee will be commencing its activities in the near future.
