Summary Report of 2002/03 Activities of the

UI Charter Committee on Human Rights

 

 

  1. Members met with the Dispute Resolution Group to provide input regarding development of a University anti-harassment policy, October 2002.

 

  1. Co-sponsored “All Johnson County Reads the Same Book” community program on November 12, 2002.

 

  1. Requested and received update from Diana Davies, Director, Office of International Students and Scholars, about newly implemented federal reporting requirements for international students and scholars, November 21, 2002.

 

  1. Recommended to Interim President Boyd that members of the Human Rights Committee be appointed to committee to assess campus climate regarding sexual assault, February 14, 2003.  Three members were so appointed to the Committee on Campus Climate on February 20, 2003.  The Committee on Campus Climate is charged to report to President Skorton by the end of the 2002-03 academic year.

 

  1. Solicited nominations for the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award, February-March 2003.  Reviewed nominations and selected recipient, March 25, 2003.  Jan Waterhouse, Chair, will present the Award to the recipient at the Finkbine Dinner, April 29, 2003.

 

  1. Appointed Immigration Issues Subcommittee, March 25, 2003.  Subcommittee will review the dual role of the Office for International Students and Scholars to advise international students and to report information about international students to the INS pursuant to federal regulations.

 

  1. Received request from Students Against Sweatshops to recommend suspension of the University’s contract with Coca-Cola, April 1, 2003.  The Committee will discuss this request at April 29, 2003 meeting.

 

  1. Co-sponsor the “Discovering Dominga” film debut, with the UI Center for Human Rights and others, April 23, 2003.
