Welcome word from our flare directors
Welcome! Since 2000, our interdisciplinary program in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has provided high-quality academic and professional training to future researchers in the field of SLA. We enjoy a close-knit community of faculty members and students, forging both intellectual and personal bonds through interaction in classes, collaborative research and development projects, and social events—we are famous on campus for our international potlucks.
Our students come from North and South America, Europe, Africa, and to study SLA at the University of Iowa. The program has affiliated faculty from seven departments in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (German, Asian & Slavic Languages and Literatures, Spanish & Portuguese, Linguistics, Communication Studies, Rhetoric, and Communication Sciences & Disorders) and from two departments in the College of Education (Teaching & Learning and Psychological & Quantitative Foundations).
A distinct advantage of our program are the many opportunities students have for involvement with research while still in graduate school. A number of our courses require and provide supervision for producing publishable-quality research. Numerous conference presentations and publications have resulted from collaborations between students and faculty members. Students also participate in faculty-initiated research projects. Students collaborate with other students on research projects sparked by informal discussions with guest speakers and in our regular reading group meetings. Conference presentations, book chapters, and journal publications are the best way for our students to distinguish themselves in a challenging job market; we encourage and support these professional activities.
We are committed to providing rigorous professional preparation to graduate students in research and teaching, and to advancing knowledge about language acquisition and language use from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
Welcome to FLARE!
