L. Kathy Heilenman holds an interdisciplinary PhD in Foreign Language Education from the University of Louisville. She had taught French at the middle school, high school and college/university levels and directed French programs and taught second language teaching /learning /acquisition at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Northwestern University (Chicago), and Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) before coming to the University of Iowa in 1989.
Currently Professor Heilenman holds a joint appointment in French and Italian and Foreign and ESL Education. She is also Co-Director of FLARE (Foreign Language Acquisition, Research and Education) and the PhD in Second Language Acquisition. She currently teaches graduate courses in Second Language Acquisition Theory and Research, the Cultural Curriculum, and Materials Development in Second Languages as well as supervising the second-year French program.
Professor Heilenman's current research interests include the role of culture in second language learning and teaching, materials development, and innovative curricula in second languages. She is the lead author of Voilà: An Introduction to French (now in its fourth edition) and has published in the Modern Language Journal, Language Learning, the Journal of Applied Psycholinguistics, and the Journal of French Linguistics as well as having authored several book chapters and edited a volume for the American Association of University Supervisors and Coordinators.
