Achievements and Activities

Sharon Meilahn Bartlett recently published “The Crossroads of Gender and Race in Shaping Masculinity in Colonial French Cinema.” Utah Foreign Language Review. Vol. XVI July 2007. Sharon presented two papers last spring, “ ‘En Guerre Contre le Féminin:’ Storytelling, Trauma and the Crisis of Masculinity.” 8th Annual Craft Critique Culture Conference. Iowa City. April 13, 2008; “Haiti's Crisis of Masculinity and the Role of the ‘Poto Mitan.’” 10th Annual James F. Jakobsen Conference. University of Iowa. March 29, 2008.

Jennifer Howell recently published "Reconstituting Cultural Memory through Image and Text in Leïla Sebbar's Le Chinois vert d'Afrique." French Cultural Studies 19.1 (2008): 57-70; and "In Defiance of Genre: The Language of Patrick Modiano's Dora Bruder Project." Journal of European Studies (forthcoming---June 2010). Jennifer is also presenting two papers this semester: "Countering Historical Revisionism through Popular Culture: Representing the Unrepresentable in Jacques Ferrandez's Carnets d'Orient," Image and Imagery Conference on Literature and the Arts, Brock University, St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, Oct. 10-11, 2008; and "Angoulême's Fauve d'Or: (Dis)Honoring the Postcolonial Imagetext?," MMLA, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Nov. 13-16, 2008.

Leah Pesola will be presenting a paper this fall at the M/MLA conference: "How To Make Good Literature Out of Dirty Little Books: A case for Francoise Rey's erotic autobiographical fiction".  Leah is our GSS representative this Fall, as well as co-chair of the Educational Outreach Committee for the year.  She is also a Group Facilitator at WRAC and served as a facilitator for Iowa Edge during their student orientation in August. Leah has been selected in a University-wide competition to be one of this year’s Fellows at the January 2009 Obermann Graduate Institute on Engagement and the Academy.
