The undergraduate major in French may be completed with an emphasis on language, literature and culture, or teaching. Listed below are the requirements for the B.A. in French.

Students must maintain a g.p.a. of at least 2.00 in all major course work, including all University or Iowa course work in the major. Majors must maintain portfolios documenting their progress toward attaining the objectives of the French major.
Transfer course work is acceptable, and students are encouraged to participate in study abroad, but the last two courses in the major ordinarily must be completed at The University of Iowa. Transfer work for application to the major is evaluated on an individual basis by the faculty in charge of Study Abroad.
Upon declaring the major (or later, but before the senior year), students choose an emphasis in one of the following tracks:
009:115 Business French, 009:197 Techniques of Translation, and 5 courses in culture/civilization, literature or language (at least 2 must be above the 009:150 level, includes 009:197). Of the seven courses, one may be a course taught under the Department number (009) in English.
5 courses in literature and culture plus 2 in literature and culture or language (at least 2 must be above the 009:150 level). Of the seven courses, one may be a course taught under the Department number (009) in English.
3 courses in literature and culture, or language (all 3 must be in French, at least 1 must be above the 009:150 level). Two or three courses in Arabic language (must add up to 10 s.h.). Two courses on Middle Eastern Cultures in French or English under the department prefix (009) or approved courses from other departments.
4 courses in literature and culture, 3 courses in language, pedagogy, or literature and culture (at least 2 must be above the 009:150 level). Of the seven courses, one may be a course taught under the Department number (009) in English.
The requirements for a minor in French are 15 s.h. with a Grade Point Average of at least 2.00; 12 s.h. must be completed in courses numbered 009:105 or above. Credit from the Iowa Regents' Summer Program in Lyon is counted as University of Iowa credit. In addition, 6 s.h. earned in other programs abroad may be applied to the minor. Courses taught in English do not count toward the minor in French. See Michel Laronde, the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
Any course may be designated as an Honors course. See the Departmental Honors Adviser in French (Geoffrey Hope).
By successfully defending an Honors thesis or its equivalent in literature, cinema, language or other French or Francophone cultural practices.
Interested students should see detailed information on honors in the major and contact the Departmental Honors Adviser in French (Geoffrey Hope) by the beginning of the first semester of the senior year at the latest.

Majors will maintain a portfolio to account for progress in attaining objectives of the French major.
