The courses offered in Italian are intended to introduce students to the Italian Language, Literature, Culture and Civilization. These courses facilitate development of proficiency in speaking and writing in Italian.
The objective of the coursework is to foster knowledge of the Italian language, Italian literature and civilization, and a critical appreciation of the historical and contemporary importance of Italy.
Students may choose from a variety of programs for majors in Italian and electives for non-majors. The course offerings afford flexibility of choice in meeting General Education language proficiency requirements and satisfaction in fulfilling individual needs and interests in Italian.
Students may choose to major in Italian, with the objective of pursuing graduate study in Italian, Comparative Literature or History, and with the goal of becoming college teachers. They may combine their studies with courses in Education as preparation for teaching in high school settings. They may also combine Italian with professional studies in International Business, Global Studies, Political Science, Finance, Travel, Journalism and Communications. In these professions, it is often essential to possess a good knowledge of foreign languages.

| One additional 100-level course taught in Italian - 3 or 4 s.h. (usually 18:132, Images of Modern Italy) | |
