Research interests are in the role of reactive oxygen species, reactive nitrogen species, and antioxidants in human diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and aging. My greatest interest is in the use of molecular biology to modulate antioxidant proteins. After modulation, we study the effect on the disease phenotype. We have used this concept to show that the mitochondrial antioxidant protein manganese superoxide dismutase is a tumor suppressor gene. Our most active project is to determine how overexpression of this protein can be used in the treatment of cancer.
