MISSION STATEMENT

 

The mission of Property Management is to maintain accountability for all capitalized assets of the University and provide timely reports and data to all levels of University management, Federal agencies, and State agencies.

 

 

Property Management Office objectives to accomplish their mission are:

  1. To comply with internal rules (University Operations Manual), regulated procedures (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), and State and Federal guidelines.

  2. To ensure that all equipment purchases are properly identified and recorded within the University database through a systematic review and input of vouchers.

  3. To record gifts of equipment as per notifications from donors giving or departments receiving such gifts.

  4. To ensure that property purchased by the University of Iowa, which meets University guidelines of capitalization, is tagged with a bar-coded serially numbered identification tag, and is properly recorded in the University equipment database.

  5. To ensure that all federally-titled equipment is recorded as federally-titled and tagged with both the University bar-coded serially numbered identification tag and Government identification tags as required.

  6. To provide central administration and departments with timely reports listing the equipment for which they are responsible.

  7. To assist and monitor departments’ compliance with the preparation of biennial inventories.

  8. To record addition to, transfer of, and retirements of moveable equipment.

  9. To provide a central system to account for depreciation calculations in compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and to support UBIT (Unrelated Business Income Tax) filing.

  10. To post capitalization and depreciation of capitalized equipment to the University’s General Ledger.

  11. To improve the manner in which asset data is gathered including electronic exchange and update of asset information.

  12. To promote a positive interaction with departments to resolve specific questions and/or problems regarding capitalized assets.

  13. To improve the product we offer and the service we provide.
