Managing in a Union Environment

Basic management principles apply regardless of the type of work environment you supervise in. However, management practices need to be reviewed in light of the various union contracts. We will review these principles and address the following concerns supervisors raise including: the 3-step grievance process, documentation and easy ways to imbed data collection into your regular supervisory practices, questions about tape recording, when a steward may be present, and reasonable amounts of time for work release in preparation for filing a grievance, and identifying your support team.
Objectives:
- Understand basic management principles for communicating, supporting, and clarifying expectations.
- Be given examples of different ways to imbed documentation into your regular supervisory practices.
- Learn about the 3-step grievance process as well as discuss other common concerns that arise for supervisors.
- Be able to identify your support team.
