Managing in a Union Environment
Course # 616
Basic management principles apply regardless of the type of work environment you supervise in. However, management practices need to be reviewed in light of the various union contracts at The University of Iowa. We will review these principles and address the following concerns supervisors raise including: the grievance process, documentation and easy ways to imbed data collection into your supervisory practices, questions about tape recording, when a steward may be present and reasonable amounts of time for work release in preparation for filing a grievance.
- Understand basic management principles for communicating, supporting and clarifying expectations
- Provide examples of different ways to imbed documentation into your regular supervisory practices
- Learn about the grievance process as well as discuss other common concerns that arise for supervisors
