Military Culture Education:
Who Are Our Vets, and How Best Can UI Faculty and Staff Serve Them?
Course # 679
We have over 500 student veterans at The University of Iowa. These students differ from the typical UI student in many ways (e.g. age, familial obligations, experiences). As less than 1% of the U.S. population is currently serving in the military, many civilian staff and faculty have little confidence in their understanding of military culture and the assets student veterans bring to campus. This 1 hour training aims to be the first step in resolving this issue.
Objectives: (At the end of this course participants will be able to)
- Understand what the G.I. Bill is and where it came from
- Understand the differences between the typical UI student and the typical UI student veteran
- Understand best practices for working with and serving student veterans
