Culture as a Continuum at Work:
Identifying the "why" in Cultural Miscommunications
Course # 698
Have you ever had the experience of an employee asking you for a day off more than one time, even though you informed her/him that it wasn't possible to approve the vacation day? This class will help you to identify the why of such communication dilemmas. Using hands-on activities involving actual conversations which feature miscommunication in the workplace, "Culture as a Continuum at Work" is structured to provoke dialogue and awareness into our own cultures, whether it be American (USA) or international. Class participants will gain self-knowledge as well as knowledge of other cultures and expand their "continuum" in multicultural awareness.
Objectives: (At the end of this course participants will be able to)
- Understand the meaning of culture in general, and identify characteristics which constitute the American (USA) culture.
- Identify the underpinnings of cultural misunderstandings.
- Be aware of instances when our interpretations of what is being communicated may not be accurate.
- Determine her/his own communication style and how that may play into the dynamic of international cultures in the workplace
Participants: (audience course is designed to reach)
Supervisors, managers, and interested employees.
