Human Resources: People Make a Difference
Course # WISK1
People are what make the University of Iowa successful in teaching, research and service. How do we attract, manage and retain the talent needed by the University? This course will begin a series for What I Should Know (WISK) about effective human resource practices. Participants will gain an understanding of both the “what” and the “why” of these functions that support the recruitment and retention of staff.
Objectives: (At the end of this course participants will be able to)
- Understand the intent and structure of the WISK series.
- Recognize how Human Resources (HR) processes support the mission and operations of The University of Iowa.
- Understand the purpose of HR functions, and what they contribute to supporting faculty, staff and organizational success.
- Appreciate shared interests of the institution and its employees in organizational success.

This course is the first of four required courses in the WISK Series.
This course will appeal to a variety of people in various positions across the university – staff or administrators – who want to have a greater understanding of how human resource practices support the recruitment and retention of talent necessary for the University to be successful.
