Geared to the experienced Internet user, the course emphasizes search strategies. Topics include planning a search strategy, using meta-search engines, and evaluating results. This class will be held twice in the Information Arcade classroom in the Main Library:

2-3:50pm, Feb. 11 and

11am-12:50pm, March 9.

Seminar on non-profit leadership

The Women’s Resource and Action Center will sponsor a workshop entitled "Effective board leadership: Managing for non-profit excellence." The seminar, part of WRAC’s ongoing social change training series, will focus on the skills and responsibilities of board members in non-profit organizations. Topics will include financial management, managing an executive director, fundraising, building effective boards, and effective meetings.

The workshop will be held from 9am-3:30pm, Feb. 19 in the Lucas Dodge Room of IMU. There is a $50 fee, which includes lunch. Some scholarships are available. For more information or to register, call WRAC at (33)5-1486.

Women’s Center coffeehouse

Music, theatre, an open microphone, and cake will mark the second anniversary of the Women’s Resource and Action Center coffeehouse. Headliners for the celebration are Graffiti Theatre and singer/songwriter Amy Carder. After the headline performers, the stage will be opened to other women performers.

The event will begin at 7:30pm, Feb. 4, at 10 South Gilbert. The coffeehouse is free, but donations are requested at the door. To sign up for open mike or for more information, call WRAC at (33)5-1486.

OASIS help sessions

Introductory and advanced classes in the use of the libraries’ online catalog (OASIS) will be held this spring in the Information Arcade in the main library.

In the introductory LOTs of Help! (Libraries’ OASIS Training) session, participants will learn basic research concepts and skills necessary to access electronic information through demonstrations and hands-on experience. The class will be from 11am-noon, Feb. 8.

The advanced session builds on the introductory but with greater emphasis on complex searching. Prerequisite is the introductory session or experience with author, title, subject, and keyword searching. The advanced class will be from 11am-12:30pm, Feb. 17.

Registration is on a first-come first-served basis. To register call (33)5-5299 or stop by the Main Library first-floor information desk.

Those who do not want to attend a formal class can attend POW (Personal OASIS Workshops). These 20-minute hands-on sessions will answer basic questions about OASIS. No registration is required for POW. Just meet at the southwest corner of the card catalog area on the first floor of the Main Library at these times: 2-2:20pm, March 8; 11-11:20am, March 23; and 3-3:20pm, March 27.
