Web access to enhanced ERIC database available

A University of Iowa Libraries technology upgrade will enable students, faculty, policymakers, and other Web users to access ERIC, the largest education database in the world with over 700,000 citations.

ERIC, the Educational Resources Information Center, covers research articles, technical reports, program descriptions and evaluations, and curricular materials. Until recently, ERIC was available only through OASIS, the UI’s text-based information database. Through OVID, a recently acquired high-end informational retrieval system that maximizes data access and research productivity, users can explore the full functionality of ERIC, whose features had been reduced somewhat by the OASIS operating system.

The easy-to-use OVID retrieval system will give ERIC users improved access to an electronic thesaurus, allow users to conduct basic and advanced searches, and grant access to related databases such as Medline and PsycINFO without having to switch to another search engine.

The OVID version of ERIC is available through the UI Libraries’ Gateway to the Inter-net, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences’ Healthnet site, or through the Psychology Library’s Web site: purl.lib.uiowa.edu/uiowa/ovid/eric, [correction] www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin-www/hnet.html, or www.lib.uiowa.edu/psych/index.html.

For further information about ERIC, contact Dottie Persson, (33)5-3079 or dorothy-persson@uiowa.edu.
