Calls for nominations The committee for the Celebration of Excellence Among Women is accepting nominations for the Distinguished Achievement Award. The award goes to a staff or faculty member in any part of the University who has distinguished herself or himself and the University through an outstanding achievement or a lifetime record. Candidates should have significant years of service within the University community in a professional or service capacity; should be considered pioneers in their work/service; and be considered role models for women and/or girls. The granting of the award will take place at the Annual Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women on March 28. Nomination forms have been distributed by e-mail. For additional forms,

no later than Feb. 7. The Honors Program is seeking nominations for its annual Collegiate Scholar Awards to be presented at the Honors Award Ceremony on April 9. Collegiate Scholars are undergraduate students who have reached the highest level of academic and intellectual achievement at Iowa and are chosen by each of the undergraduate colleges. Faculty members must nominate students for these awards by sending a letter of recommendation to Shambaugh House Honors Center. Nominations are due by Feb. 15. The Council on the Status of Women and the Womens Resource and Action Center invite nominations for the Jean Y. Jew Womens Rights Award, honoring a UI student, staff, or faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding effort or achievement in improving the status of women at The University of Iowa. Criteria include a strong record of support for womens rights, a commitment to womens rights at the UI, and one or more of the following related to womens rights: Particular contribution to UI; accomplishments with national scope or impact; a long-standing record of leadership, effort, and activism. Nominations are due Feb. 18. The Womens Studies Program announces one dissertation scholarship and two undergraduate scholarship opportunities. Faculty are asked to bring these to the attention of their students. The Jane A. Weiss Memorial Dissertation Scholarship will award $2,000 to a UI Ph.D. candidate from any discipline whose dissertation focuses on issues pertaining to women. Application forms are available from the Womens Studies Program, WRAC, the Office of the Provost, the Graduate College, and the Office of Sponsored Programs. The Ada Johnson/Otilia Maria Fernandez Womens Studies Scholarship offers an annual scholarship of $1,000 to a woman student of color who has taken courses in womens studies or whose academic interests include womens culture or experience. The Adele Kimm Scholarship is an award of at least $500. The award will go to an undergraduate student involved in the Womens Studies Program through course work or service. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service to the University and the State of Iowa. Two or three recipients will be recognized formally at the 2000 University Convocation. Each will receive $500 and a commemorative object designed by a graduate art student. Recipients must hold faculty rank in a tenure-track position at The University of Iowa. Selection criteria include exceptional contributions to the University, imagination and dedication, an extended period of service, and diverse formal and informal activities. Nominations may be made by faculty members, students, or off-campus constituents. Three faculty members must endorse each nomination. Additional endorsements may be provided by external constituents.
