Odd message on your pay stub? Here's clarification

Did you get a cryptic message on your February 1, 2000 payroll earnings statement? It said:

"To continue your exemption for fed/state withholding, new W-4 forms must be completed by 2/15/00."

This message appeared on all monthly and biweekly payroll earning statements, but it only applies to employees who claimed "exempt" from tax withholding on their 1999 W-4 form and who want to claim exempt in 2000.

If that describes you, get your new W-4 form in by the deadline of Feb. 15. If not, ignore the message.
