Francois Abboud, head of internal medicine, awarded the 2000 American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine award.

Karim Abdel-Malek, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, named John T. Parsons Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Charlotte Adams, assistant professor of dance, and twenty-four of her students, invited to perform Adams’s choreography to Rossini’s The Poetry of Physics at the American College Dance Festival.

Stephen DesJardins, associate professor of planning, policy, and leadership studies, appointed to a three-year term as consulting editor of Research in Higher Education.

Linda Fielding, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, recipient of the Literacy Award from the Old Capitol Reading Association.

John C. Gerber, professor emeritus of English, one of six recipients of the John C. Gerber 20th Century Leadership Award for contributions to the Conference on College Composition and Communication, part of the National Council of Teachers of English.

Keela Herr, associate professor of nursing, appointed to the Public Education Committee of the American Geriatric Society and to the society’s expert panel on pain in older adults.

H. D. Hoover, Iowa Testing Programs, elected vice-president/president elect of the National Council on Measurement in Education. Also on the board of directors, Michael Kolen and David Frisbie, Iowa Testing Programs.

Paul Pomrehn, professor of community and behavior health, selected to receive a Special Recognition Award from the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine for outstanding service.

Thomas L. Ray, professor of dermatology, elected to the board of directors of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Martin E. Shafer, assistant manager in hospital facility operations and housekeeping, recipient of the Phoenix Award from the American Society for Healthcare and Environmental Services.

Janet Specht, associate clinical professor of internal medicine, Meridean Maas, professor of nursing, and Debra Vogt, manager in nursing administration, selected to participate in the Summer 2000 Penn Macy Institute to Advance Academic Nursing Practice.

Steve Thunder-McGuire, associate professor of curriculum and instruction, recipient of an Arts in Education Award from the Iowa Arts Council.

University Communications and Outreach, awarded a bronze medal for Parent Times in the Periodical Publishing Improvement category by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education; contributors were Ann Freerks, designer; Anne Tanner and Jane Hoshi, editors; Rex Bavousett, Meghan Nichols, and Helen Spielbauer, photographers.
