Way Up calls for proposals
Way Up XVII, a conference for women in higher education, has issued a call for proposals. The conference is titled Moving into the New Century. Presentation topics will be divided into five tracks, each focusing on the new century: Leadership and ethics; professional skills; educational opportunities; generation issues; and careers. The planning committee also is seeking nominations for an award for a sustained contribution to the development and advancement of women in higher education.

Summer dance classes
The dance department will be offering classes for children, teens, and adults through its Dance Forum. Classes begin June 19 and continue through July 31. Registration is due June 16. For more information, contact Sara Semonis, director of Dance Forum, (33)5-2193.

Don’t throw away that thermometer
Finance and University Services has issued a reminder to all faculty and staff that it is a federal felony to either knowingly or negligently “introduce into a sewer system or into a publicly owned treatment works any pollutant or hazardous substance . . . which causes such treatment works to violate any effluent limitation or condition in any permit issued to the treatment works.”

In other words, it’s a crime to toss mercury down the drain. Deans, directors, and DEO’s were recently sent detailed information about the University’s mercury pollution prevention plan.

Scholarships for medical transcription
UIHC is offering scholarships to current UI staff members interested in becoming medical transcriptionists in Centralized Transcription Services. Selected applicants who complete an accelerated (6 months) evening medical transcription technician program at Hamilton College in Cedar Rapids may have their tuition paid in full. Applications are available at the Office of Staff Relations and Development, C110 GH. The deadline for applications is June 18 for classes starting July 19. Advanced Internet class
Anyone wishing to learn advanced Internet search strategies may register for the Using the Internet: Advanced class offered by the University Libraries, to be held 9-10:50am, July 7, in the Information Arcade classroom in the Main Library. Register on the ITS web site at http://planner.its.uiowa.edu/OSCAR/itstrain.Nsf or fill out a registration form on the last page of the Schedule of Short Courses available at the ITS Information Center.


LOTs of Help! sessions
An introductory and advanced class on the University Libraries’ on-line catalog (OASIS) will be held in the Information Arcade in the Main Library. The introductory LOTS of Help! (Libraries’ OASIS Training) session will be held from 9-10am, July 9. The advanced session will be held 9-10:30am, July 16. Registration is first-come, first-served.
