UI permanent collection paintings inspire cards, tunes

In a Village Near Paris (Street in Paris, Pink Sky), an oil on canvas by American painter Lyonel Feininger, is among the paintings in the UI Museum of Art’s permanent collection that inspired both a piece of music and a note card.
The painting is a gift of Owen and Leone Elliott.

Visitors to the Museum of Art can now take home two new mementos of the paintings they’ve seen.

Iowa City jazz pianist Dan Knight has recorded and released a CD of music inspired by nine paintings in the permanent collection. The CD, titled Pictures at an Exhibition after the famous classical piece by composer Modest Mussorgsky, features nine pieces by Knight, one inspired by each of the paintings. It is on sale at the museum gift shop for $15.

Also available is a new set of note cards featuring reproductions of five of those same paintings. The set of fifteen cards costs $13. Paintings featured in both the CD and the cards are by Jackson Pollock, Philip Guston, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, and Lyonel Feininger.
