Offices and Awards Harold P. Adams, professor of neurology, received the American Heart Association Scientific Councils Distinguished Achievement Award. Kathleen Buckwalter, associate provost for health sciences, elected to membership into the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Kevin Campbell, professor of physiology and biophysics, elected to membership into the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Mary Sue Coleman, University of Iowa president, elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Marilyn Dispensa, Information Technology Services, Jim Duncan, head of the Hardin Librarys Information Commons, and Jerry Moon, associate professor of speech pathology and audiology, awarded first place in the Sandoz/Slice of Life Student Software Development Competition for The Bones of the Skull: A 3-D Learning Tool, an interactive CD-ROM. Dispensa produced the product as part of her masters project in instructional design and technology while a graduate student in the Information Commons. Linda Q. Everett, director of Nursing Services and Patient Care at UIHC, elected treasurer of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Kristine Fitch, associate professor of communication studies, awarded the Gerald R. Miller Award for the best book published in 1998 on interpersonal communication, Speaking Relationally: Communication, Culture, and Interpersonal Connection (Guilford). Bruce Gronbeck, professor of communication studies, awarded the Samuel L. Becker Distinguished Service Award for his scholarly contributions to the discipline and his longtime service to the National Communication Association and the field. Donald D. Heistad, UI Foundation Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology, received the American Heart Association Council on Circulation George E. Brown Memorial Lectureship. Naomi Iizuka, visiting faculty member in the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, was one of ten winners of the 1999 Whiting Writers Awards. John Charles Keller, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and associate dean of the Graduate College, elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Patti ONeill, Printing Department designer, won an Award of Excellence from the University and College Designers Association for the cover design of the spring 1999 Schedule of Courses. Victor G.J. Rodgers, associate professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, received the 1999 Distinguished Service Award from the Minority Affairs Committee of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Robert Tibor, College of Engineering coordinator of the Program for Enhanced Design Experience and Virtual International Design projects, was chosen as Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsacks special adviser in building strategic alliances that will help meet the challenges of a technology-driven economy. Hell organize a technology advisory network and guide a new statewide initiative aimed at nurturing innovation and sharing advanced-manufacturing technology breakthroughs. Michael J. Welsh, professor of internal medicine, elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
