WRAC offers rally training, support groups

The Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) will offer a seminar on social change, "Planning a rally for social change," 6:30-9pm, Jan. 31, in the Penn State Room, IMU. There is a $10 fee; some scholarships are available.

WRAC also will be hosting six new discussion and support groups:

  • "Coming out," begins Jan. 30, call for details (eight weeks);

  • "Eating disorder support group," 7-8:30pm, Thursdays beginning Feb. 1 (six weeks);

  • "Exploring relationships," 7-8:30pm, Wednesdays beginning Jan. 31 (six weeks);

  • "Queer women of color," 7-8:30pm, Tuesdays beginning Jan. 30 (six weeks);

  • "Single moms support group," 6-7:30pm, Mondays beginning Jan. 29 (all semester); and

  • "Gender puzzle," 7-9pm, Wednesdays beginning Jan. 31 (all semester).

International Programs funds available

The deadline to apply for international research funds from International Programs and to propose ideas for the 2001-02 Distinguished International Lecture Series is Feb. 20.

All faculty members are encouraged to apply for the research funds, which usually are in the range of $10,000 and may be used to support symposia, workshops, conferences, collaborative research projects, or other appropriate research-related activities.

Faculty members also may propose a theme and list of speakers for the 2001-02 Distinguished International Lecture Series. Up to $10,000 in support may be requested.

Interlibrary loan service available

As of Jan. 16, all undergraduate students are eligible for the libraries’ interlibrary loan (ILL) service. Students may place ILL requests on-line at www.lib.uiowa.edu/ill or by using the request form available at all library service points. Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to work with a library staff member in formulating an ILL request. Requests typically take seven to 10 days to arrive.

Investment workshop for women

The Iowa Women’s Foundation (IWF), the Women’s Resource and Action Center, and the Iowa City Public Library will offer the fourth workshop in the 2000-01 Women and Money series, "Investment strategies," 6:30-8:30pm, Jan. 25, in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.

The workshop will address planning strategies and individual concerns about getting the largest return for your investment dollar. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Although the workshops in this series are developed for women, men also are welcome to attend. To register or for more information, contact the IWF at 337-4222 or lisa@iawf.org.



Volunteer readers needed

Faculty and staff volunteers are needed to participate in the 12th National African American Read-In Chain on Feb. 5 at Northwest and South East junior high schools.

Volunteers will visit classes and read short selections by African American writers. The event, which is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English, is designed to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month by celebrating African American writers and literature.

Intramural league signups

Recreational Services is offering the following intramural activities for faculty, staff, and students:

o Basketball (men’s, women’s, and coed leagues): Cost is $50 per team. Sign up Jan. 23-25. Games begin Jan. 29 in the FH.

o Three-point shooting contest (men’s and women’s divisions): No cost. Drop by the FH, south gym, at the following times: 5:30-7:30pm on Jan. 18, 4-9pm on Jan. 21, 7-10pm on Jan. 22, and 7-10pm on Jan. 23. Finals will be at 7pm on Jan. 24. Men will compete to shoot at half time of the Iowa-Indiana men’s basketball game on Jan. 27.

o Darts/billiards: Cost for singles and doubles divisions for darts is $3 per person or $4 per team. Billiards has only a doubles division, which costs $4 per team. Tournaments will take place in mid-February at College Street Billiards Club. Register by Feb. 1.

RVAP seeks volunteers

The Rape Victim Advocacy Program is seeking women and men volunteers who want to do something to end sexual violence and to support the people who have survived it. Volunteers are needed to become crisis line advocates (women only), mentors in violence prevention, and information advocates. Training begins Feb. 3. Celebrating women

Anyone planning an event for International Women’s Day on March 8 or Women’s History Month in March is invited to list the event in the Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) calendar of activities, which will be distributed widely.

"Celebrating Women Locally, Connecting Women Globally" will be the theme for a series of events being planned by several UI offices and other local organizations for the months of February and March. Events currently planned include panel discussions, speakers, film and book discussions, and volunteer projects.

New web site lists housing

The UI Family Services Office and the Office of the Provost have developed a housing-relocation web site to assist newly hired faculty and staff, as well as newly admitted students, in finding housing.

The web site, at www.uiowa.edu/~hrpersvc/famserv/housing/index.html, lists rental property, including single-family homes, apartments and rooms located in single-family homes, guest houses, bed-and-breakfasts, and short-term interim housing. Properties for sale and apartment complexes are not listed.
