"Our imagination of the technologized future of narrative remains much more intriguing than the actual narratives that keep turning up." Brooks Landon, chair of English, suggesting that the hypertext novel has yet to live up to its promise as a literary form (New York Times, March 5).

"This is our challenge for the next two to 10 years." M. Sue O’Dorisio, director of pediatric hematology-oncology, zeroing in on the cure rate for brain tumors among young people, which has remained unchanged at 50 to 60 percent for the last 25 years (Iowa City Gazette, March 6).

"It’s not just a crime issue or a private industry issue or a labor issue. It’s a much broader public health problem." James Merchant, dean of the College of Public Health, redefining the nature of workplace violence in today’s society (Iowa City Gazette, March 7).

"The interaction between art and science is great. This is an interesting, artistic interpretation of nature." Donald Gurnett, professor of physics and astronomy, admiring a work of music to be premiered by the Kronos Quartet at Hancher based on sounds generated by naturally occurring space signals (Iowa City Press-Citizen, March 12).

"You’re twice as likely to get the death penalty if the victim is white." David Baldus, professor of law, citing statistics to back up his claim that race is a major factor in capital cases (Spectator Magazine, Raleigh, N.C., March 13).

"We know that tax implications are not the only motivations people have for private giving, but we also know that the tax code may influence the timing and amount of giving." Mary Sue Coleman, president, testifying before the Senate Finance Committee on behalf of a plan to allow individuals to make tax-free withdrawals from IRAs to donate the money to nonprofits (The Chronicle of Higher Education, March 15).

"In general, more females are willing to take on that type of challenge." Janis Perkins, director of the Office for Study Abroad, noting that approximately twice as many women as men at Iowa choose to study abroad (Iowa City Gazette, March 15).
