"There is clearly nothing in Bush’s plan that was intended to hurt or help Gay people." Patricia Cain, professor of law, asserting that the homosexual community is invisible in the president’s new tax plan (The Washington Blade, Feb. 16).

"Family farms are not what they once were, and it’s an older population." Alan Peters, associate professor of urban and regional planning, analyzing census data that showed a population shift away from Iowa’s rural areas and into the suburbs of big cities (USA Today, March 13).

"We can get a handle on a real world problem by using this incredible technology." Jodie Plumert, associate professor of psychology, throwing virtual hazards at young bicycle riders in a simulator, rather than testing them in real-life dangerous situations (Des Moines Register, March 15).

"America is unique in the role that private non-profits play in building community." Willard "Sandy" Boyd, president emeritus, noting that many of the services that in other countries are provided directly by the government are instead provided in the United States by organizations that are funded indirectly by government through tax-deductible donations (Iowa City Gazette, March 26).

"We firmly believe that nursing is now global, that we can’t just teach nursing about local, state, and national areas." M. Patricia Donahue, associate dean of nursing, announcing the college’s intent to increase international experiences for students (Iowa City Press-Citizen, March 26).

"It makes a lot of sense that after someone experiences a traumatic crime like rape that they have a private, quiet space to wait in." Catherine Fribley, a director in the Rape Victim Advocacy Program, taking satisfaction in the UIHC’s designation of a special room set aside for exams of victims of sexual assault (Iowa City Gazette, March 26).
