Would you floss for this man?

A unique affiliation between the College of Dentistry and Grant Wood’s American Gothic led to the creation of American Dental Gothic (above). The male model for the original painting was Wood’s dentist, Byron W. McKeeby, an 1894 graduate of the College of Dentistry, so staff and faculty of the college felt it was only fitting to participate in "Overalls All Over," a project of the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The American Dental Gothic will be one of 35 renderings of the famous pair: the mannequins were manufactured in California, and sponsoring organizations dressed and painted the couples. They will be unveiled June 8 in Green Square Park, downtown Cedar Rapids, and will be on display on June 10 at the Grant Wood Art Festival, Stone City, and from June 11 through mid-October in downtown Cedar Rapids. The mannequins will be auctioned to the highest bidder at the end of the exhibition, with proceeds used to support scholarships for artists. Photo by Kirk Murray.

Time to submit updates for University Operations Manual

As you may recall, the 2001 edition of the Operations Manual was the last to be printed; as of January 2002, official University of Iowa policy will be articulated solely on-line at www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual. Though revisions to UI policy may be submitted throughout the year for immediate on-line publication, the Office of the Interim Vice President for University Relations will continue a thorough review and revision of policies as appropriate on an annual basis. Because the Operations Manual is a document with legal force, it is critical that it accurately reflect current University policy.

DEOs should already have received the June 5 e-mail and update form. Please review all policies and procedures within your area of responsibility. Any changes that have been approved since January 2001 should be forwarded as soon as possible, but no later than Sept. 30, 2001, to Eileen Bartos, 100 OPL, 384-0050, or eileen-bartos@uiowa.edu. Revisions exceeding one paragraph in length should be submitted in both hard copy and electronic form.

If you have questions about the approval process, see the Protocol for Approval of University Policies at www.uiowa.edu/~our/opmanual/i/protocol.htm or on page iv of the 2001 Operations Manual. In addition, the Offices of the General Counsel and of the Interim Vice President for University Relations are available for facilitating policy development and review.

If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please contact Eileen Bartos, Gerhild Krapf, 5 OC, (33)5-1886, or the Office of the Interim Vice President for University Relations.

Ideas for summer reading?

The University of Iowa Press has published a number of books in recent months whose authors have University of Iowa and regional connections. They include:

Foundation posts record year

Alumni and friends from every state and 31 other countries gave a total of $65.4 million in outright gifts in 2000, the UI Foundation announced in May. 1,974 of those gifts were from UI faculty and staff, who contributed a total of $3,311,163. Of the $65.4 million total, 15.6 percent was designated by contributors for student financial aid; 11.9 percent for buildings and equipment; 17.4 percent for faculty development; 51.9 percent for collegiate, departmental, research, and special project funds; and 3.2 percent for unrestricted use (wherever the need is greatest).

Coralville provides transit options

Good news! Coralville Transit bus passes are now available to permanent UI employees who don’t have a parking permit for $10 a month. Employees with parking permits are eligible for a $23 bus pass. The fee may be payroll deducted on a pre-tax basis. Parking and Transportation has been offering Iowa City Transit discounted bus passes since November 2000, and currently, 525 employees are using the discounted passes. For more information, call the Parking and Transportation office at (33)5-1475.

Appointments announced

  • Susan Buckley has been named interim associate vice president and director of human resources. Buckley, the current associate director of human resources, will assume her new duties on July 1. She will replace Bob Foldesi, who has been named the associate vice president for human relations at the University of Notre Dame.

  • John Keller, interim dean of the Graduate College, will continue this role for the immediate future. Keller has served as interim dean since June 2000. A search for a new graduate dean has been under way since July 2000. Several candidates were interviewed, but no recommendation for an appointee emerged from the process. Keller, professor and director of biomaterials research and of the Dental Student Research Program in the College of Dentistry, was named associate dean of the Graduate College in September 2000.

  • Chris Kula was appointed manager of Central Mail Systems effective May 14. He served previously as supervisor of bulk mail. He succeeds Lou Eichler, who retired from the University in March.
