Teachers from five eastern Iowa high schools nominated students to spend a week on the UI campus in June as part of the first ACE (Ambassadors Connecting with Engineering) Academy. Activities included tours of engineering research facilities and a spine biomechanics demonstration by David Wilder, associate professor of biomedical engineering. The ACE academy was organized by engineering administrators Gary Fischer, associate dean for academic programs, and Jane Dorman, director of admissions and outreach, to encourage the study of math and science among high school students, particularly female and minority students.

Photos available for UI web sites

University webmasters and administrators who want to liven up their sites with quality photography of a variety of campus scenes can now download images at no charge from the Office of University Relations (OUR) photo web site at www.uiowa.edu/~urphopix.

The site contains more than 350 photographs categorized into campus, classroom, research, activities, community, and more. The “more” section includes portraits of key UI administrators and soon will feature portfolios of OUR photographers. There are also links to other campus photography sites. The site was constructed by photographer Rex Bavousett and designed by Bavousett, chief photographer Tom Jorgensen, and designer Ann Freerks.

All photographs on the site are copyrighted and are available for noncommercial use by UI students, faculty, and staff. Image quality is suitable for use on University web sites but not for publication.

For more information on the site or on how to purchase publication-quality images, e-mail the OUR photo staff at pubsphoto@maczone.university-relations.uiowa.edu.

Get to know international students

Anyone interested in helping an international student feel welcome is invited to attend the Friends of International Student (FIS) picnic on Aug. 25, from 3 to 8 p.m. The need for friends will be even greater this year, as the University expects an increase in international student enrollment this fall.

The picnic will be held in Lower City Park, shelter 6, rain or shine. Bring food to share. Current FIS members are asked to bring their student friends to the picnic.
