“It immediately made you wonder, ‘Could this be done in human beings?’ It suddenly made it seem like it might be possible.” Michael Welsh, professor of internal medicine, recalling a moment of hope in a 1992 experiment in which gene therapy corrected cystic fibrosis cells in a petri dish (The Wall St. Journal, June 11).

“It’s not going to bring peace on earth.” Alan Peters, associate professor of urban and regional planning, finding flaws in Iowa City’s plan to create a new urbanist style housing development on the peninsula in the bend of the Iowa River (Iowa City Gazette, June 15).

“It’s refreshing that the court is not quite predictable these days.” James J. Tomkovicz, professor of law, noting that the current law-and-order Supreme Court has issued several surprise rulings protecting the privacy of citizens under police investigation (The New York Times, June 17).

“The mandate to make Iowa the new destination for the world’s immigrants is misguided and pie in the sky.” Stephen Bloom, associate professor of journalism and mass communication, suggesting putting the brakes on the influx of people into Iowa towns that may lack the social and physical infrastructure for a mass immigration (The Boston Globe, June 18).

“When I was little, I wanted to be an astronomer, but eventually I realized I was a lot better with words than numbers, so I pursued my degrees in English.” Doris S. Witt, associate professor of English, celebrating her tenure with a vacation to an astronomy resort and an observatory (The Chronicle of Higher Education, June 22).

“You can’t put a Volkswagen engine in a Cadillac and expect it to run.” Douglas Behrendt, professor of surgery, explaining why a pair of different-sized brothers currently waiting for heart transplants couldn’t use the same heart (Iowa City Gazette, June 27).

“Employers are offering these policies with one hand and penalizing with the other.” Jennifer Glass, professor of sociology, citing the results of her recent study showing that mothers who take advantage of company policies allowing them more flexibility at work tend to receive lower pay increases than those who don’t (Des Moines Register, June 29).
