InfoHawk updates, replaces OASIS catalog system Some library patrons might have noticed the libraries early August changeover to InfoHawk, which offers users of the web-based system varied keyword search methods, easy-to-use retrieval options, and access to more than three million holdings of the main and 11 branch libraries. In the coming months, InfoHawk will allow patrons to search millions of catalog titles by providing access to the databases of other cooperating libraries and many specialized databases. And InfoHawk does away with the OASIS requirement of typing search parameters such as "LCAT" when initiating a search. This method has been replaced with a pop-up window that appears when a title is typed in the keyword search window. Users can also read and print abstracts and review their currently checked out titles. The InfoHawk name and logo acknowledges the UIs Hawkeye mascot, says Donna Hirst, head, Library Automation Office. The new name reflects a hawks ability to actively search a broad area and focus on its target, Hirst says. A UI contest to name InfoHawk produced five winners, each of whom will receive a $100 award. The winning submissions were received from Anthony Carroll, sophomore, journalism and communications studies; Anna Sluz, graduate student, geography; and Renee Vant Land, graduate student, Institute for Hydraulic Research. Ronald Lauer, professor of pediatrics and epidemiology, and Diana Hu, senior, film production, each received $100 from a separate contest drawing. Lauer has donated his prize to the UI Libraries project funds. Hu says she will use her winnings to help finance her thesis film. Two additional $50 prizes were awarded by a drawing of all submissions and were presented to John Fry, doctoral student, history, and Yiqiang Wang, postdoctoral researcher, Department of Internal Medicine.
