Focusing on family

The Family Services Office is offering several educational seminars on family issues this fall.

Employees who have questions about the Family Medical Leave Act and how it relates to sick leave, emergency leave, and parental leave can attend, "UI leave policies: How does the family medical leave act interface with other leaves?" noon-1pm, Nov. 9. General information will be provided.

If you have caregiving responsibilities for elderly parents, relatives, or friends, "Tools for talking: Conversations between generations—helping families discuss later life changes," noon-1pm, Nov. 16, is designed to help families plan for and discuss problems associated with changes in later life.

Staff from Elder Services, Inc., will be on campus Nov. 28 to provide guidance, information, and referral service to those with elder care concerns. Schedule a private, one-hour session with an RN or social worker between 1:30 and 5pm.

To register, make an appointment, or for more information, contact Jane Holland at (33)5-1371 or jane-holland@uiowa.edu.

Honoring religious diversity

The Office of Affirmative Action will hold a campus forum, "Honoring religious diversity," 2-4pm, Nov. 9, in the Minnesota Room of the IMU. As the winter months approach, a time when several faith-based celebrations occur, it is especially important for the campus to understand the issues involved in honoring religious diversity.

This session will explore various scenarios, University guidelines, and practical techniques for creating respectful environments. Affirmative Action also has several written and video resources available on world religions and honoring religious diversity in the workplace.

For more information, contact Affirmative Action at (33)5-0705 (voice), (33)5-0697 (text), or www.uiowa.edu/~oaa.

Socially responsible shopping

The Iowa Women’s Foundation (IWF), Women’s Resource & Action Center, and the Iowa City Public Library will offer another workshop in the Women and Money series, "Using our money wisely: Taking social responsibility to the market," 6:30-8:30pm, Nov. 14, in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library.

Diane Finnerty, diversity resources coordinator for the Office of Affirmative Action and adjunct faculty member in the Tippie College of Business, will address shopping issues just in time for upcoming holiday spending. Topics include the effect consumer demand has on the environment and the impact consumers have on their economies when they shop locally.

For more information or to register, contact the IWF at 337-4222 or lisa@iawf.org.

Phone number correction

Two phone numbers listed under Travel (Vouchers)/Travel Reimbursements on page 59 of the 2000-01 herdbook are incorrect. The phone number for Kevin McGlynn should be (35)3-2580, while the phone number for Andrea Winters should be (35)3-2504.

Flu shots still available

This is a reminder that flu vaccines are available free of charge to permanent, full and part-time (50 percent or greater) employees through Nov. 15. You must bring your University photo identification card. There is a $6 charge (checks only) for part-time (less than 50 percent) and hourly employees and a $6 charge for all vaccinations after Nov. 15.

Vaccination locations are available at www.uiowa.edu/~uehc/. For more information, contact University Employee Health Clinic at (35)6-3631.

Workshop on social change

The Women’s Resource & Action Center (WRAC) will feature a workshop, "Social action and the arts: Using forum theatre as a method of social change," 9am-5pm, Nov. 18, in the Minnesota Room of the IMU, as part of its ongoing Social Change Training Program.

Participants will learn introductory theater exercises and games that represent the techniques of the "Theatre of the oppressed," a revolutionary theater form that uses audience participation to generate ideas and actions to overcome societal oppressions.

There is a $25 registration fee to attend the workshop, which will be facilitated by members of Graffiti Theatre. Scholarships are available. To register, or for more information, contact WRAC at (33)5-1486.
