“We can’t find enough people to fill these very specialized jobs.” George Neumann, professor of economics, examining the surge in foreign-born skilled workers moving to Iowa in the past decade (The Burlington [Vt.] Free Press, Nov. 26).

“It’s a general maxim that the federal government is seen as intrusive and disruptive to an employer’s judgment. Some resist even if it doesn’t make a bit of difference to their cost.” Peter Blanck, professor of law, studying resistance to the Americans with Disabilities Act despite evidence that it is 40 times less expensive to make “reasonable accommodations” than to terminate an employee (Chicago Tribune, Jan. 9).

“Clearly, we need to do more in the area of salary.” Lee Anna Clark, associate provost for faculty, responding to a Board of Regents report that 18 percent of UI faculty members who resigned last year cited a bigger paycheck as their primary reason (Iowa City Gazette, Jan. 10).

“People think a testing program solves problems. We want to talk about the difficulties and complexities of testing.” Sandra Damico, dean of the College of Education, discussing the role of Iowa’s colleges of education in formulating Board of Regents policy on assessment of students and teachers in the K-12 system (Iowa City Gazette, Jan. 11).

“I’ve come to terms with who I am.” Jael Silliman, assistant professor of women’s studies, accepting her identity as a member of the Baghdadi Jewish community where she grew up in Calcutta, India (The Chronicle of Higher Education, Jan. 11).

“It’s very reassuring for parents.” Ann Marie McCarthy, associate professor of nursing, finding that despite slight neurological damage from changes in their blood sugar, children with Type I diabetes perform as well in school as their nondiabetic siblings and peers (Iowa City Gazette, Jan. 12).

“We’re not talking about going out and being a marathon runner and killing yourself. If you can walk for 150 minutes a week—that’s 30 minutes a day, five days a week—you can make a marked difference in your health.” Linda Snetselaar, associate professor of epidemiology and internal medicine, encouraging moderation and patience in Americans’ resolutions to lose weight (HealthScoutNews, Jan. 13).

“It was impossible to not be greatly affected by him…. [He was] the living embodiment of always moving forward in the right direction and bringing people with him in his quiet manner.” Willard “Sandy” Boyd, professor of law and former UI president, remembering Philip G. Hubbard, known as a human-rights advocate during his 50 years as a UI student, professor, and vice president, who died Jan. 10 (Chicago Tribune, Jan. 14).

“It all adds up to a pretty impressive record.” Carol Scott-Conner, head of surgery at UIHC, commenting on the “extraordinary” number of women in UI leadership roles (Iowa City Press-Citizen, Jan. 15).
