The UI Human Rights Committee is seeking nominations for the annual Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award. The award, consisting of a plaque and a $1,500 scholarship, is presented each spring to the UI student who has made the most outstanding contributions in the area of human rights. The event, which is open to all faculty and staff, tentatively is scheduled 10:30-noon, Feb. 14, in 301 LC. Tim Covell, the Iowa representative for Blackboard, will demonstrate Blackboard Version 6 and answer questions. The Office of Affirmative Action is offering two unique opportunities to increase effectiveness in a diverse work and learning environment: The Diversity Dialogue program consists of structured, facilitated discussion groups that meet for 10 consecutive weeks to talk and learn about diversity issues. The spring 2002 groups begin Feb. 18. Register by Feb. 13. Facilitating diverse groups is a two-part workshop scheduled 9am-noon, Feb. 15 and March 8. It will focus on developing awareness and skills to effectively facilitate and provide culturally competent leadership within groups. Register by Feb. 8. The Pilot Grant Program of the Environmental Health Sciences Research Center is seeking innovative research proposals related to environmental health from UI researchers. Areas of interest for funding includebut are not limited toenvironmental risk factors for disease, assessment of exposures to environmental agents, and environmental and mammalian toxicology. The application deadline is noon March 1. The Committee on the Celebration of Excellence Among Women is now accepting nominations for the 2001-02 Jean Jew Womens Rights Award. Criteria for the award, which is given to a student, staff, or faculty member, include a strong record of support for womens rights in a broad sense, a commitment to womens rights at the University, and one or more of the following related to womens rights: particular contributions to the University; accomplishments with national scope or impact; and/or a long-standing record of leadership, effort, and activism. The deadline for submission is Feb. 18. The award will be granted March
27 at the annual Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women
