Submissions sought for rights award

The UI Human Rights Committee is seeking nominations for the annual Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award.

The award, consisting of a plaque and a $1,500 scholarship, is presented each spring to the UI student who has made the most outstanding contributions in the area of human rights.

Nomination materials are available at 249 IMU. The deadline is noon March 8. The winner will be announced April 16 at the Finkbine Dinner. For more information, call (33)5-3557.



Blackboard software demo

Academic Technologies is sponsoring a demonstration of the latest version of Blackboard, the leading Internet infrastructure software for e-Education. The event, which is open to all faculty and staff, tentatively is scheduled 10:30-noon, Feb. 14, in 301 LC.

Tim Covell, the Iowa representative for Blackboard, will demonstrate Blackboard Version 6 and answer questions. He also will discuss the company’s recent acquisition of Prometheus and how Microsoft and Blackboard view their partnership.

Recreational Services is offering the following intramural activities for faculty, staff, and students:

• Wrestling (men’s): Begins Feb. 12; weigh-in is Feb. 11.

• Darts and billiards (men’s, women’s): Begins March 5-6; register by Feb. 28.

• Inner tube water polo (coed): Begins March 10; register by March 7.

Diversity programs offered

The Office of Affirmative Action is offering two unique opportunities to increase effectiveness in a diverse work and learning environment:

• The Diversity Dialogue program consists of structured, facilitated discussion groups that meet for 10 consecutive weeks to talk and learn about diversity issues. The spring 2002 groups begin Feb. 18. Register by Feb. 13.

• “Facilitating diverse groups” is a two-part workshop scheduled 9am-noon, Feb. 15 and March 8. It will focus on developing awareness and skills to effectively facilitate and provide culturally competent leadership within groups. Register by Feb. 8.

Environmental health center offers grants

The Pilot Grant Program of the Environmental Health Sciences Research Center is seeking innovative research proposals related to environmental health from UI researchers.

Areas of interest for funding include—but are not limited to—environmental risk factors for disease, assessment of exposures to environmental agents, and environmental and mammalian toxicology.

Names sought for women’s rights award

The Committee on the Celebration of Excellence Among Women is now accepting nominations for the 2001-02 Jean Jew Women’s Rights Award.

Criteria for the award, which is given to a student, staff, or faculty member, include a strong record of support for women’s rights in a broad sense, a commitment to women’s rights at the University, and one or more of the following related to women’s rights: particular contributions to the University; accomplishments with national scope or impact; and/or a long-standing record of leadership, effort, and activism.

The deadline for submission is Feb. 18. The award will be granted March 27 at the annual Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women in the Main Lounge, IMU. For more information or a nomination form, see www.uiowa.edu/~wrac/JeanJewAward.html.
