Spring workshops aim to help DEOs lead efficiently, understand call to leadership

Departmental and executive officer (DEO) workshops have been scheduled for spring semester. The February workshop, Running an Effective Meeting, will be tailored specifically for DEOs, using examples from University departments. The March workshop, Leadership and Team Building, will be presented by Walter Gmelch, a nationally known figure from Iowa State University who offers workshops all over the country.

Running an Effective Meeting

This interactive workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, Feb. 18, W401 PBB. The presenters, Maureen McCormick of UI Staff Development and Randy Hirokawa, professor of communication studies, will discuss strategies for handling the difficult situations that come up in faculty meetings. Using examples that come from the current group of DEOs, the class will include role-playing possible scenarios and discussing the outcomes.

Leadership & Team Building

This workshop will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., March 29, W401 PBB. The presenter will be Walter Gmelch, dean of the College of Education at Iowa State University.

The first part of the session will address the call to leadership and help department chairs to reflect on their motives, roles, and stresses as they journey down the road of academic administration. The second part will explore key elements of departmental team building. Specifically, the session will:

• explore the trade-offs and pay-offs of departmental leadership;

• experience, through simulation, the key skills of effective team leadership; and

• develop strategies for effectively leading a department through shared leadership, team goals, constructive conflict, consensus decision making, supportive climate, and faculty development.
